There are many places on the world wide web
that offer free space for a home page. Browse through some of their user's
pages before you decide on the one you like best. These are some things to
check when evaluating where your homepage will be:
- How reliable is the server? Were you
able to get to their home page quickly?
- What types of advertisements do they
put on the pages? This is how they can afford to give you free space.
Many providers are using "pop-up" windows with
advertisements (this is called "Push" Technology). A new
browser window will pop up with an ad in it while the page you want to
look at is loading. Other providers put a simple banner across the top
or bottom of your page.
- How will you get your HTML files onto
their site? Some providers only allow you to email them the files and
they put them up for you. This way your files won't be online
immediately. We recommend that you choose a provider that allows you
to FTP your files onto their server or has a file manager on their
website that you can use with your browser. There are several FTP
software packages available for download at TUCOWS.
If you are going to have a lot of graphics,
you will need quite a bit of space. We've listed below only those sites
offering 5MB (megabytes) of space or more. Also, you might first want to
check with your internet provider. Very often they provide their users
with free webspace and assistance in setting up a personal webpage.
